More Lead Belly - Last Sessions 4 Disc Set

Sorry,I've been busy trying to earn a living and trying to
also find this 4 disc set online.Well it took a while but I
finally found it,and purchased a copy to share. This is
just what it says, Lead Belly's last sessions ever, from 1948,
a year before his death. He was a remarkable talent, and he
had a large repertoire of folk songs and popular songs either
he made up or songs he learned from others and kept the
song alive,by playing it live or recording it.It's a little like
he absorbed the songs from other musicians,and added his
songs,wrote his own songs as well. A great interpreter!
This series of discs will show a wide range of songs he did.
These songs were also his first tracks recorded on magnetic
tape,which was a brand new technology at the time!
The new audio tape recording process will also give better
dynamics to his voice and guitar playing,since those older
field recordings were not up to snuff.
Lead Belly was a great interpreter of songs,these 4 discs give
you,dear music fanatic,almost his entire repertoire of music.
These recordings were done over a three night "recording session".
These recordings are also significant as,they were made
quite simply, as if he is just sitting around the house.
Not just anyone;'s house either, at Frederic Ramsey Jr's house,
who was and became the co-author/editor of Jazzman,The Jazz
Record Book,Jazzways.And editor of the Folkways Jazz
Series.He was also the 1953 recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship
for studies in Afro-American music. These recordings are not
professionally made,but recorded like a music interview. He talks
about the music,how it relates to his own life, and these
recordings are not edited in any way! When these sessions
were finally committed to vinyl,they were not separated by
song bands, they were put out exactly as they were recorded.
The only company that would agree to do this was
Moses Asch's Folkways Records. Which was a label
dedicated to documenting folk music,old and new.
Lead Belly did a record for Folkways Records in 1941.
This project, was also incomplete,as Lead Belly died before,
the full recordings of his repertoire were captured.
There was still more music in him!
Lead Belly died of the same disease that killed Lou Gehrig,
and it wasn't caught in time,he was at the latter stages of
chronic poliomyelitis when he died on December 6th,1949.

Lead Belly - Bourgeois Blues

Again,the rich music of Lead Belly -which if you listen
carefully has inspired more modern music.In the song:
"In New Orleans" we hear the beginnings of the classic
"House of The Rising Sun"(made famous by The Animals).
The Bourgeois Blues picks at how life really is, in
Washington,and becomes one of the first heard folk protest
songs ever, recorded in the 1930's! Looky Looky Yonder,
becomes the beginning to the song Black Betty...which
is covered by a lot of people. One that comes to mind
who keeps his covers real is Nick Cave(and the Bad Seeds)
Who does a fine job of Black Betty keeping the Looky Looky
Yonder part in the song.
Gallis Pole loosely becomes Gallows Pole (Led Zeppelin)
And the list goes on. Lots of great music here,if you just
plain love the blues in an original form. The "originator"
Lead Belly. It's blues and it's folksong.

Lead Belly - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

I know I've been off of blogging for a while. I was busy
trying to get my new computer in shape,and change my
internet service provider who wasn't all that great-the
service I had to the web was on and off. More off than on!
Well, I was busy listening to Lead Belly,King of the 12- string
guitar, and reading this excellent book that's pictured below.
I'm still not finished reading it, and know I don't know everything
about Lead Belly,but I'm gathering some knowledge little by little.
It seems the old story is true,Lead Belly aka Huddie Leadbetter,
did commit a crime that landed him in jail,and yes he sang
for the warden and Texas Governor Pat Neff ,and was
pardoned.And if it wasn't for John & Alan Lomax the father
and son folk music historians we'd never know about Lead Belly.
John Lomax,the father went through the south and many
other states recording the music in the field,he was
a collector and always used the music and knowledge
of his subjects strictly for educational purposes.
Why is Lead Belly so important to Mojo Repair Shop?
Well, I'm always on a mission to know where music came
from,and I often stumble over the fact that so much music,
by unknown and well known musicians is often exploited.
It seems in order to be known,there's no way around it,
musicians are going to be exploited. Whether they
get their music recorded and played on the radio,or
someone like John Lomax had to bring the music to the
people in order to hear the real thing. And while reading,
it seemed like Lead Belly was exploited. But then again,
we'd never know about the music...the rich songs he
recorded like Midnight Special, Black Betty, and making
Goodnight Irene into a genuine folk song that was covered
by hundreds of other artists. And these are but a few songs.
Don't forget Where Did You Sleep Last Night,an incredibly
haunting song...and that's just a small portion of the songs
he made.
Huddie Leadbetter was born just outside of Mooringsport
Louisiana on January 20, 1888 or possibly January 29th 1889.
So he's one of the oldest blues folk-artists I've ever heard.
Huddie started playing the guitar,a typical Stella model
that was fairly easy to buy through the Sears Catalog.
(Thank you Sears for making guitars available cheap for
young people to buy and learn to play!) Huddie started
playing the guitar at 13 years old,and like most farm raised
African-Americans from the south,playing the guitar for a
few pennies or working on a farm from sun-up to sun-down for
the same few pennies-which one would you prefer?
Well, the guitar! Well it was obvious which direction he'd rather
take. The blues really hadn't been found or invented yet,so
Huddie learned and played from other musicians he saw.
Records were available but only to people who had money.
(You could buy a table top player for about 20 dollars)
And at that time that was a lot of money.
So, he had in fact learned how to play strictly from other
musicians and singers in the delta. Music that is passed down
in person, not from a radio or a record. As Huddie grew older,
he busked the streets of Shreveport,and Dallas with
Blind Lemon Jefferson. All he knew was farming and
playing the guitar.
He played guitar on and off, but mostly did a lot of farming
in the meantime. Lead Belly's temper got the best of him
around 1917 when he killed a man, and was sentenced
to the state pen in Huntsville for 30 years. Music became
his salvation, and he was pardoned in 1925. 5 years later,
Huddie found himself in more trouble with the law,
and was convicted of assault with intent to murder,
the incorrigible Huddie served his time in the Louisiana
State Penitentiary. Meanwhile legendary musicologist John
Lomax and his son,Alan were driving all over the south,with
their trunk weighed down with primitive recording equipment,
searching for music for the Library of Congress.
The pair made "field recordings" anywhere, that was quiet,
and recorded musicians on the spot. At a prison farm or
literally in a field. John Lomax entered
Lead Belly's life in 1933, when they came to Angola in search
of musicians to record some folk songs. When they heard
Lead Belly sing and play they hit the mother-load.
The Lomaxes asked Louisiana Governor O.K Allen to
pardon Huddie ,and he was freed and the rest is history.
Well... sort of.
John and Alan Lomax brought Lead Belly's music to
record and radio. And they took Lead Belly to New York
to perform, and show people his talent. Lead Belly played
everywhere, mostly on the college circuit for very little money.
It seems John Lomax didn't really want Huddie to go off by
himself much, and get into trouble, so he kept him near
and paid him very little money-and pretty much exploited
his talents.
It helped Leadbelly's music be known, on one hand,but on
the other hand, he was close to a circus act. Often billed
and filmed as the ex-con in comic exaggeration in prison garb,
serenading John Lomax and his fellow prison inmates.
Does this sound anything like a Hollywood movie?
Just replace Huddie Ledbetter with King Kong! Huddie
performed, wrote, and played all the songs he knew,or songs
passed on to him through listening. He was also cleaver about
making up songs on the spot. His talent lies in hearing the
rich past of folk songs, and blues, and making them into
his own songs. Instead you see a film footage scene of
John Lomax,busy typing away,while Huddie lumbers
through the door,wearing farmer coveralls,his faithful guitar
around his neck,and announces:
"Boss, here I is! I came here to play and to be your man.
I've got to work for you the rest of my life.You got me out
of that Louisiana pen". The crusty Lomax replies"You
can't work for me.You're a mean boy.You killed two men".
But Lead Belly beseeches him "Please Boss,take me with you!"
Won over by such a magnanimous display,Lomax acquiesces.
"Thank you sir boss,Thank you! I'll drive you all over the
United States and I'll be your man".
Well, it helped and didn't help the African American race.
That's what I struggle with. It just stinks of stupid.
You know, if John Lomax didn't hear Huddie sing, we'd
never know about him,and on the other hand, it was great
to at least promote him and his music so, he could have a
career, because he -Huddie was able to latter record for
ARC and Banner Records,as well as The Library of Congress.
But the way it was all done?! It just seems like whites
exploiting black. This would be a common thing as time
goes on in the music business...but then again, any and all
musicians were exploited by their labels...what's changed?
Practically nothing.
Well, Huddie's music is there to listen to, and it inspired a
great bunch of people who made folk music as it is today
(Woody Guthrie) and at least inspired Sonny Terry &
Brownie McGhee,and maybe paved the way for other
black performers to get their due.
So I guess we have to sometimes regard the past as the
past,and reap what you can from the music. So now I gather,
all of my Lead Belly music for you here...Hope you dig it as
much as I did!

Skip James - Studio Sessions -Rare And Unreleased

Excellent blues! Excellent songs!
No one can sing and play like
Skip James.This is from a previously
unreleased 1967 recording
session, and Skip only had a couple more years
left on this planet. So even though this music
is what we would call his last efforts,it sounds
as fresh and sincere as any of his earlier records.
Some people just "got it",you know?
No matter where they are, they can
just sing it right from their soul.
This music reminds me,of Honeyboy Edwards,
and the recent "music awards
show on TV" just finally awarded this soldier of the
blues,one of the last of his kind...they finally awarded the
genius Honeyboy Edwards a lifetime "achievement like"
award. (I didn't look this up,I just saw him in the
crowd on this show,and they put the spotlight on him,
and it made me weep!) Well,sometimes they do get
things right,and it's hard to believe it!
Well, back to Skip James...this disc has yet another
variety of tracks not on anything else,making it essential!

Skip James - Devil Got My Woman "Sickbed Blues"

Alright,I'm back. I can think better,my brain is working
better,and finally my hand can type,and I can post some
music to sample here. I will occasionally type things
backwards and forwards. I think I am developing some
kind of dyslexia. So I hope it's only temporary.Okay,
here's something to sink your teeth into.
Skip James!
God, I love this man...this is soulful blues...the best
kind too.When I wasn't feeling so good,my best
buddy gave me music to listen to,and enjoy. Music
heals the brain,you know. And I already had some
Skip James,but apparently I just forgot how great
he was.So Thanks H,for reminding me the
sheer beauty of all things Skip James.
His voice is haunting,and his music is unlike no
one else.Please sample these three releases.
(if I can get them up here on this site) I'm only
doing it, so you develop a habit,a habit so when
you see any Skip James CD or album,that you
buy it.
Trust me,you'll need to have your own copy
to read,and enjoy his history. Not enough is
said about how amazing Skip James really is.
His high-pitched voice, almost a falsetto,
and how he plays the guitar along with it.
It's spare, simple and beautiful.

Ouch I have a concussion.

I fell and hurt myself,and need to rest. I slipped, and fell, my head
hit a pipe and I feel dizzy,tired,and can't balance myself that well.
I also have blurry vision ,headaches, but it's going away....
The doctors say I should be okay in 24-48 hours, and will be okay.
(not everyone agrees with that though! )
I'm still here.
I'm gathering music to share and other things. I know that the blog
world is weird and people might think you've left it all behind.
Nope, I'm just resting. I need a lot of rest. As soon as I start
complaining, I should be back to normal.Whatever normal is.
That's the sign I'm okay.

Computer Problems # 64

I'm having computer problems. I know it's time to upgrade
to a better computer.I think my power supply is dying and
I have to replace it,I thought it was a virus,because
the computer was acting "funny". So,the top picture is my old
computer,and the second picture will be my new "media center"
that includes a handy cassette built in to the keyboard to make
better music posts.I guess you can't have 4 hard drives,an
ipod,and a toaster attached all at once. Oops.
Maybe Santa will bring me another computer that works.
But I don't know if I was a good blogger or not.

Here I am again,after taking some much needed time off
from blogging,doing other things. I found another vital box
of music in my collection that needs to be heard. This
particular set is 6 discs with 139 tracks of happening
music. I hope to bring more of this kind of music later,
I also have some Little Walter,John Lee Hooker, and
Earl Hooker(John Lee's cousin),some Skip James discs,
I don't know what else,but if you like that kind of stuff,
you'd better stayed tuned. I'm on a blues kick, and have
been for a while, and maybe I will go back to posting
rockabilly and other things in the future. I'm just into this
right now....okay? Jimmy Reed The Vee-Jay Years
is another Charley series box set, so if you understand
what that means it's a giant set,sounds better than anything,
and it's as complete as you're going to set. "Charley
NEVER releases any crap" is what I say,and you can
quote me. This is where it's at, hipsters,there's a lot of
bands who covered Jimmy Reed,and when you listen to
this set you will know why.

It packs the most punch...it's otherworldly.
It's hoodoo voodoo. Just listen to the Woman
Wanted 8 takes-there's some pretty amazing guitar
playing,and these were thrown away! (See take 3)
One of those Chess brothers complains he's popping
into the mic.Well it's all live in the studio, everyone's
doing it live all together.It's great to hear studio
chatter it's always funny, to hear them swearing,trying
to make a record! One of the takes Muddy says he
forgets what he's doing,all while he's playing these
incredible guitar runs...he forgets?
He must've done this stuff in his sleep he's
so natural about it.I'm just not so sure about
Muddy's Recipe For Love,I'm thinking mine is
more nine disc box sets of more music huh?
Another recipe for love would be that Chess
Records releases more outtakes and tracks
they're sitting on!

Discs seven and eight good music fans:
pretty much a lot of the songs appear on the Folksinger
album from disc seven. Disc eight really gets moving
with some faster blues numbers are probably younger
players with Muddy, that are spirited,I'm totally digging
the tune My Dog Can't Bark,too bad they didn't keep
the song going,it gets pretty interesting,then fades out.
I also like the tunes Put Me In Your Layaway Plan,
Hard Loser,Find Yourself Another Fool,
Kinfolk Blues,and other standard shouters / blues wailers.
I'm apt to stay away from the 1968 horn tracks, like
Going Back To Memphis, and the country fried
Corine,Corina. It just doesn't sound like he's into
the groove,man. Oh well,there's still plenty o music
for everyone here whatever your thing is.

You can't have Howlin' Wolf without Muddy Waters,
so I'm also going to post this whole series here on this
blog.The way things are going, maybe blogger might not
last much longer,(no don't freak out,just be wary of it)
and if you enjoy music as much as I do, it's best to post
the things that matter and mean something to
you,so that's why I'm veering off into the blues lately. Plus
I like listening to it, and find it more creative than today's
latest rehashed shit rock coming over the speakers. I'm
certain even the artists today wish they had a shred of this
man's talent. And for you people who think I'm living in
the past,well,I think it's a better place than right nowsville.
This ain't no nostalgia trip,this is real music to bite into.
And if you're smart,you're gonna pick this up,listen to it,
and see for yourself why I think it's great! So much rock
& roll and punk comes from the blues. It's honest and real.
It's made by people who didn't take music lessons,and they
just kept making music,even though it was not popular or
widely accepted. When Motown began churning out big
city hits, and more polished records for urban blacks,
music made for and made by black people everyone
abandoned this form of countrified blues.Even though
people in Chicago dug it, the new sound was Motown
and guys like Muddy had a rough time getting people to
buy his records after that. I'm glad the Stones came
along and reminded people where the real blues rock
came from. I'm glad that Chuck Berry came along and saved
Chess records from going down.Chuck's records were
more modern, and easily more marketable to radio,they
sold well making Muddy able to still record even
though his kind of music was on the way out.

Howlin' Wolf - Complete Chess Recordings 1951-1969 Discs 6 & 7

The lasts discs- volumes 6 & 7 contain 18 and 24 more tracks
each. Gotta have more Wolf, never can get enough. There's
some amazing outtakes, on these last disc. I'm talking
about disc 7. There's You Gonna Wreck My Life
(Alternate Take), Moaning For My Baby (3-4 takes),
I've Been Abused (Takes 5-7) Howlin' For My Darlin'
(Takes 1-7), and the best stuff is Mr. Airplane Man (Takes 1-2)
The Wolf messes up the lyrics, and the engineer, probably
Leonard Chess starts telling him,Ah...Wolf...the airplane flies
he doesn't sail...motherfucker"...Clearly Wolf just had
done a long session, and maybe screwed up a line...
usually they recorded long ass sessions, to get the
feeling right. All recorded live, why bother adding anything,it's
warts and all,and beautiful the way it is. The music,it's spine
tingling, it's ferocious, how do you top this?
I love the howls, and falsetto echoing howls.This is a cool
series of discs and I'm glad I could share them with you.
I'm not sure what I'm gonna post next, this series of discs has
got a hold on my ears. I might start going through more blues
discs, and well, I don't know, find another band to obsess
about, like usual.

Howlin' Wolf - Complete Chess Recordings 1951-1969 Discs 4 & 5

Disc 4 & 5 feature 24 and 25 more songs to wet your whistle.
Some of the best songs Willie Dixon ever wrote are on disc 5.
And disc 4 is mostly Chester Burnett or Howlin' Wolf's written
songs. How can you compare? You can't compare
"I Asked For Water" to "Down In The Bottom", they're both
equally great. One particular song was written by both Burnett
and Dixon and that is "Howlin' For My Darling". Again, they are
all strong songs, even the ones,that aren't blues ready classics are
still better than many other blues artists best works. Maybe it's
the delivery, and the emotional content. You bet it is.
Sam Phillips "When I heard Howlin' Wolf, I said,This is for me.
This is where the soul of a man never dies!"
Then Wolf came over to the studio...he was six foot six, with
the biggest feet I've ever seen...He would sit there with two
feet planted wide apart,playing nothing but the French harp,
and I tell you, the greatest show you could see to this day
would be Chester Burnett in my studio".
The first session at Sun Records was held on May 14th or
in July of 1951,with the Wolf, Willie Johnson, and
Willie Steele (Ike Turner added his energetic style on piano
on "How Many More Years") There was no attempt to tone
down the powerful sound of the band,indeed the first
results encapsulate the Wolf's sound: the eerie moans and
howls,the rasping and menacing voice,the consistent lyrical
theme of being cheated and abused,all fueled by aggressive
harp and guitar playing.
The results were new,exciting and immediate. I give you,
both discs 4 and 5, it's the mostest daddy-o.

Discs 2 and 3 have 21 and 20 tracks each, and
MANY songs you never heard before. A lot of tracks
are alternate takes,and many songs are never played
on the radio-EVER! So there's a wealth of music
that is begging to be loved by you. My favorite song
must be Forty-Four. I'm not really so sure what the
song means,but it lumbers along,and I think
he's singing about carrying a gun,to do some harm.
He wears this gun so long,it made his shoulder
sore. I think that's what he's singing, but I guess the
lyrics don't mean that much for me,I like the
melody and the stomping and the piano,which
takes an active role in this song. It's menacing.
I also like the Wolf's fine fine harmonica playing.
I like the guitar, I like the stomp.I like the drumming.
Nobody plays this song on the radio?!
What's wrong with you? I'm guessing if some opened
minded blues DJ played it, listeners would call and
ask about this song,and love it. If you love this band,
and Howlin' Wolf's music, I urge you to read a book
called Moaning At Midnight-The Life And Times Of Howlin'
Wolf By James Segrest & Mark Hoffman. It's a complete
biography of an amazing guy. It's a fantastic book.

before him or after him had that fantastic delivery-that certain
something in his voice that seemed like a sword that'd
pierce your soul when he'd sing. Wolf was already a great singer
and musician when I first met him. To my mind, he's one of the

Howlin' Wolf born Chester Burnett June 10,1910 -
January 10th,1976.
He's one of my favorite musicians,and singers,ever!
This is from the series on Charly Records, and is very hard to find,
and worth tracking down, simply because it's so full of music,
it's hypnotizing, it's emotional,it's the greatest blues recordings,made
from an amazing man.
I'm not the only person who feels this way...So recollected
Robert Palmer on seeing Howlin' wolf perform in 1965,but that was
only the beginning: "The signal to finish (the show)led to a grand finale
of Wolf feigning an exit,and suddenly making a flying leap for the
curtain at the side of the stage. Holding the microphone under his
beefy right arm and singing into it all the while,he began climbing
up the curtain,until he was perched far above the stage,the thick
curtain threatening to rip...then he loosened his grip ...slid right back
down...hit the stage,cut off the tune,and stalked away,to the most
ecstatic cheers of the evening. He was 55 years old".
I wish I could have seen that!!! As if the singing and playing didn't
slay you, the climbing the curtain surely made you shit your pants,
what a showman! Well, while you listen to this disc,please think of
that image.This is a powerful performer, and they don't make 'em
like this anymore.

the fans, just busy doing other musical things. Trust me, I'd never
keep you from Chuck Berry,he's just too cool!
Well, the last remaining discs here have 14 tracks,16 and 24
per disc, and are just as important of any of the other discs!
Now, you are a hipster. Don't forget Chuck inspired The Beatles,
The Stones, and The Beach Boys, and untold thousands more
musicians, and then all of the non musicians who are just fans!

Chuck Berry - The Chess Years Red Box - I Want to Be Your Driver

Discs Five & Six today, with 25 and 27 tracks each. Still a couple of
cool hits and a lot less known tracks from the 1950's, and some from
the early 60's to mid 60's.This is perhaps the more less known music:
My Mustang Ford, Merrily We Rock & Roll, She Once Was Mine,
Ain't That Just Like A Woman, Lonely School Days, I'm A Rocker,
No Particular Place To Go, Chuck's Beat, I Want To Be Your Driver,
and it's strong as ever with that Chuck Berry patented riff all throughout.
It's also some excitable, happy music, the song Butterscotch is a
serious guitar workout,instrumental not to be missed.
A lot of these 60's tracks have the same themes in them from the
vintage 50's Chuck, but they never seem to sound too dated.
After It Over is a slow blues instrumental number that really
shows his guitar playing off. Everyday We Rock & Roll is yet
another guitar riff-fest.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band- Grow Fins - My Human Gets Me Blues

Disc 5 from this series,and the final one missing here.
This disc contains the tracks from various time period 1969-1980
and is a collection of live shows,work tapes,& live radio broadcasts.
I only wish there were more discs in this series, and more out takes
because it's always interesting to hear tracks that are maybe just
sketches, or different versions to see what the Captain might have
been thinking about. This disc is also has the most different players
that came through his band. The revolving door of players can
sweeten the sound, and add some other sound elements.
Either way, this is a must-have set. Track list included.

Captain Beefheart is for lunch today,here's discs 3 & 4
and most importantly are a whole disc of tracks from the
1969 Trout Mask Replica sessions,and they are excellent
sounding takes. Makes you wonder what the Captain
thought was acceptable and not. And how could he tell?
He must have been going for that certain feeling, or that
weirdness that you can't describe. Either way, a
secret decoder ring list of all of the band people that came
and played along, just so you can keep score. It was a
revolving list of people adding their color to the canvas.
Complete with track lists, disc one contains all of the
artwork for you to make your own box set. Just color
nice kids,and you don't have to stay within the lines either.

Chuck Berry - The Chess Years Red Box - Too Pooped To Pop

More of The Chess Years and the fabulous Chuck Berry:
Discs 3 and 4 feature 29 and 30 songs on each volume,and
are packed with tons of lesser known songs. These discs are
most likely the best sounding material, that inspired so many
bands to pick up a guitar and give these a try. Which shows,
that these songs are not complicated,so much as the brilliance
is in that they are simple,catchy and so hum-able,they are
hard to resist, and usually the most memorable. Plus they
have a really happy energy and enthusiasm that you hear
when he sings and plays, that just pulls you into the music.
The "Go Go Go Little Queenie" singing has got a great riff,
and a simple sing along that appears easy to write, but are in
reality difficult. It's actually hard to condense all of those feelings
into a 2 minute 30 second song. "Back In The USA" sounds
downright anthem like. "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" could
be anyone of any color,he just has to have brown eyes.
Nadine is also a wonderful riff-fest, and will play in your head
for days. I don't think this music really needs describing,it's
just exciting to hear again. I doubt that today's charted music
can hold a candle to this. Complete with artwork/scans below.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band- Grow Fins - Sure 'Nuff n Yes I Do!

Don Van Vliet was born Don Glen Vliet on January 15, 1941.
We should re-title this particular box set and call it "Painting with Music".
This set of 5 discs will set you up with the best material from
1965-to the mid 1970's and early 80's.
Where do you start with Captain Beefheart? He's a musician,
and a painter, a sculptor, and probably 3 other things. He had a
band of revolving musicians,much like his pal, Frank Zappa had.
The music? well, it's jazz,it's blues, it's psychedelic, it's experimental,
much like his paintings, and it's all over the place. Why be one thing?
Why not invent something no one else does? Well, success never
came with chart hits or huge sales in large numbers,but there was
plenty of artistic success. There's material on here from the early
A & M records period, from the first album, Safe As Milk,
the classic album you ought to own. Then there's more material
from we'll call it, the Buddah records years, and finally a large
chunk of Trout Mask Replica, his opus, which was released in
June of 1969 on Zappa's Straight label. Much of the rest is of this box
is early to mid 70's period Beefheart,which is a variety of sound
paintings. What other way can you describe it? Well,
BBC Radio DJ John Peel stated:
"If there has ever been such a thing as a genius in the
history of popular music,it's Beefheart.I heard echoes of his
music in some of the records I listened to last week and I'll
hear more echoes in records that I listen to this week."
The White Stripes have released an EP as a kind of dedication
to the Captain, including
'Party of Special Things to Do' and 'Ashtray Heart',and there's
this wonderful CD/LP compilation called Fast 'n' Bulbous
A Tribute To Captain Beefheart (from 1988) And it features:
XTC,Sonic Youth,the Membranes and many more. I'm certain,
this set could light your Beefheart fuse and set you off listening to
more,so that's why I'm posting it. I'm just going to tell you,
to please be open minded and don't think all great music has to
be a hit record,or too rigid, conforming, and 4/4 time.

Chuck Berry was born on October 18,1926 in St. Louis,MO is still
alive and kicking and playing live shows! Did you know that?
Guitarist and songwriter extraordinaire with a box set of 9 discs
here,my hope is,you are going to get a complete education
on Chuck.He isn't just about one song called "Maybellene", so,
I expect readers to listen,and hope you get a better picture of him.
The famous joke here,is, Chuck's only number one song is
"My Ding-A-Ling". My Ding-A-Ling or not, He was inducted
into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in it's first year, in 1986.
Richard Berry (no relation to Chuck) another brilliant 50's
songwriter recording artist drew on Chuck Berry's
Havana Moon,as an inspiration for his own song, the now
classic Louie Louie, the song that launched many a
garage band. From listening to this music for weeks now,
there's a lot more to Chuck than just one or two songs which
really don't define him as an artist. He was one of those musicians
who wrote and sang and played his own music,which for the
mid-50's was no small feat. He wrote a blend of country,hillbilly,
rhythm and blues,but blues with a big giant beat (but trying to go
beyond the old blues style).
Leonard Chess recalled: "I told Chuck to give it a bigger beat.
History, the rest, you know? The kids wanted the beat, the cars
and young love. It was a trend and we jumped on it.
While Elvis was a country boy who sang 'black' to some degree,
Chuck Berry provided the mirror image where country music
was filtered through an R&B sensibility.
If he didn't get a big hit with Maybellene right away,he might
have not been able to keep recording and making records for Chess.
He was ahead of the pack, with one hit song under his belt,
that was enough for Chess Records to jump into rock and roll,
and stray from the deep south blues sounds,they were typically
making. As long as you produce those hits. And he did. Like me,
you will probably really start digging his lesser known hits.
He wrote durable, clever catchy melodies,and the way he played a
guitar launched a million bands. Ask Keith. Actually ask any
British Invasion band that question. There's no color barrier
when you write your own songs and play them, like he does.

This is a really nice set of 3 discs,of early Johnny Cash music,that
came out on a really small label in Italy of all places.Fruit Tree Records.
Licensed from Charly Records, so it's fine quality and this series is worth
noting for it's excellent sound,and well, it's Sun Records singles and
tracks from albums that you must own.There's 20 tracks per disc,and it's
really very moderning sounding for recording made in the mid-1950's.
They must have gone back to the master tapes to make these.

Wanda Jackson- Right Or Wrong 4 Disc Box Set 1954-1963

Well,since you loved Wanda so much,I have this to add
to your library of music. This set came out on the much loved
label Bear Family, and I'm happy to be able to share this
with all you fans of rockabilly,country and snarky girl rockers.
This set features 124 more Wanda Jackson songs you can't live
without. There's country,rockabilly,rock 'n' roll, and even some
exotic sounds from Wanda. 4 Discs complete with artwork,
which is really fine looking, and some awesome photos of
her in her prime. This set came out in 2001, and was hard to get
even then,fans of Bear Family know it's hard to find this stuff.
If you EVER see a copy of this for goodness sakes buy it!
You'll be kicking yourself if you don't. The sound is lush,
and jaw dropping. My buddy heard it, and immediately had
to have a copy, and he's this dyed in the wool hippie.
(I mean he can't stop listening to that late 60's album rock)
Apparently Wanda Jackson had an "effect" on him.
Yeah it's that good. Even if you're NOT a fan of country music,
I think Wanda is still very easy to like,so give it a listen,and
tell me what you think.

Michael Yonkers Band-Microminiature Love and The Twin Cities Electronics Mad Scientist

I think this sums it up,so why bother writing my own...
A cult artist the likes of Captain Beefheart, the Fugs and
the Godz, Minneapolis' Michael Yonkers has been toiling in
obscurity since the late '60s. With a solid foundation of surf rock
and garage, Yonkers pushes the limits of distortion with guitar
and effects modifications, and a raw and blunt approach to
underground rock & roll. Born in 1947, Yonkers began playing
guitar in the early '60s. Raised on Link Wray and the Trashmen,
he officially started his music career as the leader of Michael &
the Mumbles (great name!)who played proms and dances in the
Twin Cities area. Constantly redefining and stretching the limits of
their sound, the group eventually evolved into Michael Yonkers Band
with Michael's brother Jim on drums and Tom Wallfred on bass.

In 1967, Yonkers cut his Telecaster down to a plank and began
the other modifications on his equipment that would solidify the
band's unique approach. Soon, Minneapolis music impresario
Peter Steinberg landed the band a contract with Sire Records,
not unusual for a time when major labels were combing the
underground for bands like the Mothers of Invention.

Microminiature Love was the group's first full-length and was
intended to be released in 1968, but for reasons still unknown,
the deal with Sire fell apart and the band broke up,their
brilliant debut left languishing on a shelf.In 1971, Yonkers'
back was broken in an on-the-job-accident at an electronics
warehouse -a twist of fate that led to years of exploratory
surgery that only made matters worse, and an allergic reaction
to X-ray dye that left the guitarist with a degenerative spinal cord
condition.But Yonkers kept recording, and released three solo
albums on his own label in 1974-Grimwood (recorded in 1969),
Michael Lee Yonkers (recorded in 1972) and Goodby Sunball
(recorded in 1973) as well as Borders of My Mind with
Jim Woehrle.Thy Will Be Done followed in 1976 and then
Yonkers was relatively unheard of for two decades. In 1997,
Get Hip Records released a compilation of songs recorded at
Richfield, Minnesota's Dove Studios called Free Flight:
Unreleased Dove Recording Studio Cuts 1964-69
which contained two songs from Microminiature Love,
"Puppeting" (which was mislabeled as "Microminiature Love") and
the anti-Vietnam war song "Kill the Enemy." These stripped-down,
seminal art rock tracks caught the attention of De Stijl's
Clint Simonson, who spent over a year searching for Yonkers.
Simonson released the virtually forgotten Minneapolis psychedelic-garage
album Microminiature Love in 2002. The vinyl-only edition quickly
became a record collector favorite, and in 2003 Sub Pop put out the
CD of this strange, lost album complete with six bonus
tracks recorded circa 1968. -Charles Spano, All Music Guide.
Also: I included the fabulous Dove Records 2 acetate tracks,
that appear on the Get Hip release,so now you are a Michael Yonkers

It's the 40th Anniversary of Brian Jones mysterious death,and
I just came across this set,and think it's fabulous
sounding.Crisp clear studio outtakes, and several versions
of songs we all know and love: versions of : Jigsaw Puzzle,
2000 Light Years From Home,Citadel, We Love You,
Child Of The Moon, She's A Rainbow, The Lantern,
Sing This All Together, Gomper, 2000 Man.
Plus some working song titles: Gold Painted Nails,
Majesties Honky Tonk, In Another Land Chorus,
Soul Blues, Blues # 3, Five Part Jam, all of these are clearly
songs they're still trying to work up into the album. A lot of critics
thought maybe the band was just trying to compete with
The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper,but from listening to this, this is just
another record with a variety of ideas, and songs, perhaps it was
an attempt at making a story or trying to string songs together to
make a themed album. It was actually slated to be released before
the Beatles album,but courts,drug busts and other things kept them
out of the studio,and made it that harder to make cohesive album.
Still, this is cool,and you feel like a fly on the wall getting a
chance to hear how they make songs.
Complete with artwork,fronts/backs with detailed take numbers,
and song titles, enjoy!

The Seeds - Flower Punk 3 Disc Box Set Sky "Sunlight" Saxon RIP

I fear people aren't going to remember Sky Saxon,so maybe
if I post some of his music this will remind how cool The Seeds were.
This is a 3 disc set, that came out in 1996, and was pretty much the
ultimate set you could find. Disc 1 and 2 feature all of the great studio
music you'd expect: Can't Seem To Make You Mine,No Escape,the
wonderful Evil Hoodoo, Pushin' Too Hard, Try To Understand,
Excuse,Excuse, Mr. Farmer, Nobody Spoil My Fun,
Rollin' Machine, Out Of The Question, and many many more.
Disc 3 will start out with 11 recorded live tracks which
does not say what year,but sound vintage 1960's to me.The rest of
Disc 3 have the later period 60's material that never quite had
the same impact as the "Pushin' Too Hard" single yet still rock with
the same intensity. Disc 3 is still fine garage/psychedelic 60's with
The Wind Blows Your Hair, Falling Off The Edge(Of My Mind),
Satisfy You, and Lose Your Mind. I did in fact, lose my mind when
I saw Sky Saxon perform a few years ago. They did quite a long set
of music,which was amazing, and while watching them perform with my
eyes closed it sounded like I was transported back in the 60's.
The sad part is, he moved back to the USA,and lived recently in
Austin,Texas, which to me, sounded like he was going to do a lot more
touring and shows here, and that's a real shame that people are not
going to see him perform again. I should post some of my photos
from the live show, he was really energetic, and fun.

The Jackson Five- Anthology 2 Disc Set and The Ultimate Collection

Sure this doesn't fit into my blog, but everyone wants to hear it.
I'm like a DJ and try to play requests. So I'll guess I'll be a good
blogger and post it. These two disc sets are pretty much out of
print,and the best sounding and have all the hits you would want
to hear from the early to mid 1970's. Which is, I guess my favorite
Michael Jackson period. I didn't realize I had a favorite
Michael Jackson song or period, But I guess I like the
"Dancing Machine Soul Train Robot Dance Period".
That was always fun to watch. Includes scans of the artwork,
and pin up pictures suitable for framing.

20 Tracks strong, this is a great introduction,education and primer
book on Gene Vincent. There are however, several boxed set editions
of more Gene Vincent out there in cyberspace, but this one sounds
real good! You want more, go and get them. But this one will
certainly get you going. He wasn't just famous for "Be Bop A Lula"
and I find his lesser known tracks to be much more interesting.
Listen to the fabulously erotic track "Woman Love", and see
what I'm talking about. Clearly he's inspired by gospel music,
country and rhythm and blues and you can hear all of these styles of
music on this one cool disc. Link in the comments daddy-o.

Whoo hoo, I love getting and sharing this music...and I'm hopped up
to tell you about it. This release has some super rare stuff by:
Howlin' Wolf or Howling Wolf - an acetate of "Riding In The Moonlight"
which was a reworking of "Moaning At Midnight" or
"Morning At Midnight"
Plus there's a real nice version of Pinetop Slim doing a
fabulous take of "Baby, Please Don't Go", and the one man band
of the great Joe Hill Louis.There's something raw and wonderful about
the blues, that you can also hear in a lot of rockabilly music.
These recordings were made between
1948-1953 and were issued by Modern Records, and worth a
isten. So, please give them a chance.Many of the tracks were never

Slim Harpo - The Best of Excello Records - Baby,Scratch My Back

This will fix your mojo, man. These 16 tracks will whirl around
in your head, and make you a believer that Slim Harpo, is and was
one the best rhythm and blues artists ever. They say he's "Swamp
Blues", but I really don't care what they wanna call it, it's just
plain great. You can't eat a diet of just rockabilly music,and not hear
this too, folks! And even Mick Jagger said: " What's the point in
listening to us doing "I'm A King Bee", when you can listen to
Slim Harpo doing it?"
Well, I couldn't agree more. But then, The Stones recorded a lot of old
blues songs, and were champions or at least were honest about who
inspired them. I just saw a clip of Howlin' Wolf on Shindig ,baby.
And that the Stones were not gonna do that show unless The Wolf
was on it with them, was a testament to them as music lovers. What's
that got to do with this? I don't know. But I know that a lot of artists
are inspired by other artists.The track "I'm a King Bee" was inspired by
Memphis Minnie's awesome Bumble Bee song.
The man, Slim Harpo meant business, they say he carried around
a large metal tackle box filled with harmonicas to his shows,
and you can hear he meant business on this fine release. This is
just like some starting fluid on your coals in your grill to get you going.
I suspect you'll want more of this once you hear it...so stay tuned.

Red Hot Rockabilly Parts One,Two,Three Various Capitol,Imperial,Liberty Records

Quite possibly the ugliest album/CD covers I've seen in a long
long time,but the music inside it makes up for it. It's mostly made
up of the mid to late 50's very early 60's rockabilly/ rock from
Imperial Records, Capitol, and Liberty Records Stable-o-Stars.
It's not a bad batch of stuff,either. Well, not as good as the out
pouring of love for Wanda Jackson, you guys loved her in the
last post, and I'm glad. I could not stop playing her music, and I
think I actually forced at least 10 people to go out and find her
music. I guess that was the point.
This new set of rockabilly 3 volumes worth should also spin
in your players just as much. There's a good bunch of tunes,
that aren't the most obvious choices for compilations, and that's
what I really like, these are a little more obscure songs, and I have
to admit, I actually prefer hearing the artists more obscure works.
I don't wanna hear Buddy Knox's "Party Doll", or the big hits of
Ricky Nelson, or Eddie Cochran's massive hits, I think the lesser
known tracks are never played on radio,and are always a sweet
surprise. The idea is to dig for the other music, and not just get off
on the radio played hit. These artists are not one trick ponies, and
there's no such thing as over night success. So if your ears are open,
to this, you're going to be a happy camper with this series of
Red Hot Rockabilly 1,2,3. Enjoy 'em!

release contains her strongest tracks, and all 18 of them will convert
your miserable soul to rockabilly music, and those good girls gone bad.
Never mind that sleepy old timey album cover, what's inside is where it's at mister.
She's a real rockabilly/country shouter and make sure you
listen to these tracks or else! Rock Your Baby, You're The One For Me,
Cool Love, Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad, Mean Mean Man,
Baby Loves Him, and of course, Dona 'a Wan 'a.
Oh sorry I've been a bad blogger lately. I had a computer

Wanda Jackson- Self Titled - Just Call Me Lonesome!

18 tracks of Wanda's country-rock album from 1958,and has the making
of things to come,when she delivers the real shouter "Rockin' With Wanda"
less than a couple of years later, and makes cool rock and roll history by
combing rockabilly and country, sung "by a girl". Boy it was time to put her
into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame so people would appreciate her finally.
At least her name's out there,and the regular folks who don't know her
might just buy her records, and give it a chance.
This is long overdue,so listen to the music that made her the coolest chick!
There's nothing as cool as her voice, it's as unique as say, Howlin' Wolf's
incredible untrained voice, and it's unmistakeably Wanda Jackson. It's
highly addictive and there's no one really like her!

Stomper Time Records -Fernwood Rockabillies- Have Guitar Will Travel

I really stink as a blogger, letting all of you rockabilly fans go
alone without something. So here's a taste of some other rockabilly
music from another label so much like Buffalo Bop.They raid the
vaults,and give you 35 tracks! Yow! And when I find more of these I'll
sure post 'em. (as long as I'm not hurtin' anyone's feelings)
Look at the cover of this release, and who do you see? Look at those
three guys leaning on that car! Scotty Moore,Bill Black who largely
run this label,and play on many of the tracks...and....
who's in the middle,but Elvis. That should tell you what you're going
to get, some rockabilly music from the Fernwood label and the
Memphis area. Oh, sure some of the bands might be from across
the state line, or a state or two over, but largely your getting music
that was 1956 Memphis in it's rockabilly heyday buzzing days.
Some of the bands released tracks as late as
1965, but they didn't know what year it was, and they must
have been living in a bomb shelter,or never wanted to know Beatlemania
took over. Shh,don't tell them,otherwise you'd never hear this great stuff.

to the sounds of Doo Wop music at all, but give it a try. It does sound
old fashioned to most people,but some things just might actually grow
on you after listening to them. It's super rare music in the same tradition
of the usual Buffalo Bop rockabilly, and I will feature more of these as

Buffalo Bop - Rock And Roll Riot - Sonny Flaharty "My Baby's Casual"

Okay,I know I haven't been posting much lately. But sometimes
you get busy with work ,and life, and other things. But fear not, I'm
not really gone, I'm still here. Just have things to do! At least I have this
one ready to go, and don't worry,I'll be back. I have more rockabilly
to share. This volume is one of the best in the series of Buffalo Bops,
and is yet another 30 fantastic tracks of original rock from the 50's.
Some of it even early 60's. The one track that stands out, is Sonny
Flaharty doing a track called My Baby's Casual. There's no evidence
yet that says yes or no, but that could very well be the same Sonny
Flaharty that recorded the awesome 60's garage tune " Hey Conductor".
I'm still not sure, internet does not tell me for sure if he was an early
rocker from the 50's,but his voice surely says yes to me. Sounds like
the same dude. But that's not the only highlight here. There's 29 more
awesome rockabilly rock tracks to sink your teeth into. And I've also

I bought this photo at a music convention,many years
ago,and the seller told me he took this photo of Buddy Holly
at a show in either Wisconsin or Minnesota in 1959. I couldn't

Buffalo Bop - Rough Stuff - Pinch Me Quick

menacing,but the music inside follows no theme other than more
highly charged 50's rockabilly rock, by the original artists and released
on small independent labels.That's how a lot of great songs come from.
From people who believe in them well enough they take it upon themselves
and record and produce it themselves.Either the record company doesn't
believe in what they're doing,or the bands are making this music in their
basements and garages in obscurity,and have no need for those record
labels.After all, if you read about bands,and artists especially in the
1950's, the labels were the power = the owners.
And all these talented musicians would get virtually a penny per sale
of their recordings. These bands are not well known, so they sank
into obscurity, and became "collectibles". Buffalo Bop is the
company that doesn't want you to forget these bands,and makes the
music come alive again.The wonderful thing is, you hear the single as it
came off the vinyl, with no foolish noise reduction, which strips the
sound of the recording of it's nuances, and raw beauty, it's charm
and appeal. Again, another compilation with no theme, is just more
rare rockabilly in my book. The highlighted tracks are: Pink Shoes,
Teenage Baby, Ready To Go Steady,
Tuff-E-Nuff Baby, Fluffy Dog, Study Hall Blues, Grandpa's Rock,

The cover of Rockabilly Party looks more like a hillbilly strip
club scene, a bad scene from Deliverance or something of that nature.
One of those fellows has a Molotov cocktail in the back round,okay.
I'm confused. But the music inside is all pure original 1950's rockabilly
various artists and it's a good one. It's a theme of miscellaneous songs
and themes: Little Red Caboose, Lonesome Old Jail, Waitin' For A Train,
Bubble Gum Boogie, I'm Being Haunted, Way Up Alaska Way,
Sleepy Time Blues,Rockin' Through The Tunnel Of Love, Have Myself
A Ball, All Messed Up and Married Life Blues.Something I'm sure

Yeah you can tell by the cover what's going on here. I don't know
how many songs you can sing about North American Indians,
but this compilation has probably the most ridiculous amount of goofy
tunes I ever heard. This one is by request,by the way. So thanks for
that, I always read the comments sections,and keep that in mind when
I look for more things to post here. But so far I'm sticking to the
rockabilly music compilations,until I run out. Why? I was hoping to
convert more people to this brand of 50's rock and roll. It's fun!
The tracks that will absolutely drive you to crash your pick up
truck and drink beer,here are these fabulous songs: (just kidding)
Cowboys and Indians, War Paint, Massacre, Bobby Sox Squaw,

Oh,this cover on Rock-A-Billy Barnyard is priceless isn't it?
If you had a big red Cadillac in the yard , how come you can't afford
that uppity indoor plumbing? And yeah, I've worn those gingham
checked dresses while doing the chores...but I'd probably turn around
and yell at those guys to help me tote my bucket, you lazy mules!
Well, 30 more fabulous rockabilly rock songs from the 1950's.
The theme should be chickens,horsies, and cows, but it isn't.
Only one song about chickens, but the rest are all top flight rockabilly
styled music just like all of the other volumes.The stand out songs here
are: On The Warpath, Tall Oak Tree, Born Unlucky,
Barnyard Rock n' Roll, If You Don't Like My Apples (great title)
and The Dirty Bird Song (You Can't Hardly Get Them No More).

Wild Men - Buffalo Bop - You Shake Me Up

It's a busy busy Mojo Repair Shop,why, there's a lot of people
who want some holiday music,and the gift of music all around here.
It keeps me from my blogging and getting a chance to listen to more
cool rockabilly sounds. Well this volume of Buffalo Bop is just as strong
as most of the others, featuring another can't-go-wrong 30 tracks, from
the early 1950's-to the early early 1960's. But never, ever venturing
into surf land. This is all strictly 50's rockabilly rock, and it's all from
the smallest independent labels from all over the great U.S. of A.
The strong tracks here are: Roly Poly, I Can't Stay Mad At You,
Boogie Beat, You Shake Me, Teenage Boogie, I Was Too Blind,
Saturday Jump, The Slide and The Surfin' Freeze.
While The Surfin' Freeze is not a "surf" song, it's more
of a strange California themed rock song stuck on the twist craze
kinda beat.Perhaps the waves are on the rise,and Dick Dale will soon
show up,knock our socks off,,and start a new sound. We hope so.

Well, this title pretty much says it all doesn't it? You betcha!
Another 30 tracks of vintage rockabilly from the 1950's, with
cool songs like: Wiggling Blond, How About A Date, Hot Dog,
Bop A Lena, Rock n' Roll Grandpa, Raised On Rock n' Roll,
It's A Lonely World, and Blankety Blank.
It's a hoot to listen to, and I think this series will get you hooked
to this sound, make sure you check out other blogs with this kind
of fabulous music. If you're a total crack-pot like me, you might
as well go under the google search engine,and type rockabilly
and rapid share and look out. Hope you have a large hard drive,
you rock and roll monkeys. I know some people like to abuse
rapid share, but how can you when you get to hear all of this
lovely music? Never complain about it because you never know
when this whole damn thing will come to a crashing end.

They're rocking my stereo, and I'm digging these particular tracks:

Muscle Beach, and Nervous And Shakin' All Over.
Another fine compilation of vintage sounds that are truly addictive.
There's more Buffalo Bops and Dee Jay Jamborees I'm not
sure you hep cats want me to post. I've got several volumes of
Explosive Doo Wop, Philadelphia Doo Wop, Brooklyn Doo Wop,
and White And Still All Right! Doo Wop From The Late 50's-
Early 60's. You guys want that or just the rockabilly?
To me, they're a contrast in music and different sounding...
But hey, whatever floats your boat. I'm more the rocking type

a theme and the theme is trains. I would say this volume is
largely country western rockabilly sounding,but still really
a fun ride without a doubt. There's 2 versions of Mystery Train,

One Way Track, Hey Mr. Porter, Kansas City Train,

songs about difficulties between boys and girls. Which is
mostly what a lot of songs are about anyways...aren't they?
Just think about it? Most songs were written because someone
was angry, in love, crazy, or any other strong emotion.
Teen Town's highlighted tracks are: All About Cha,Babe,
I'm Hypnotised, Tell Me Quick,Tell Me True, Spin The Bottle,
You Broke My Heart, and one particularly unusual one called
Coconut Girl. And it's all vintage rockabilly 50's styled, the original

Oh, what a cover -she's just being coy, not stuck up! And
how many juvenile delinquents would be caught dead near a
barbershop? And beating someone up? I think they'd be working
on their jalopies, and just hanging out, not popping some guy in
the face. Oh well, more rockabilly action kittens and cats.
My favorites are the obvious wacky songs like: Lovey Dovey,
Preacher Man, Rolly Polly, Griddle Greasin' Daddy,
Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis!, Stella Got A Fella,and the
ever popular Let Me Play With Your Poodle. (what a strange title)
Again, all of the fabulous 50's sounds,without cleaning up the
fidelity too much. Mastered from the original 45's, so it's the way
those kids heard them back then. These discs really capture that
innocent early rock 'n roll time period.

Hasil Adkins-Chicken Walk Buffalo Bop

One of my favorite crackpots,Hasil Adkins. It's pronounced
"Hassle" not "Hay-zil" He's considered an "outsider artist" but he
once claimed he just had "bad microphones". I would have to agree
with Hasil. And that's what must have prevented him from having
that "big hit". Success eludes a lot of us Hasil. He was a warm hearted
sweet guy, that slightly scared the hell out of me,when you saw him
live in person.You just never knew what the heck was going to happen
at his shows. Either way, once you hear the music it either grows on
you,or you shake your head in confusion. If you shake your head
with confusion, I don't know why you're even on this site! And you're
not cool. He was a one man band, and drove to every show
a la Chuck Berry styled touring,and played all of his own instruments
all by his own bad self. He's a one of a kind.
And I assure you this disc is way out of print and worth getting, right
along with his opus "Poultry In Motion" disc from Norton Records.
Wake up before the coolness passes you by you sheep-people.
He's already passed onto hillbilly heaven, and he died while on tour.
Born April 29th, 1936 Passed on to the great geetar in the sky
on April 25th,2005. We should make April Hasil Adkins month
don't you think? Vote "Yes", on your ballot.
On wikipedia, he was billed as country,rock and roll, blues,
and JAZZ! Hmmm. Is that what that is? And he was equally skilled
on the harmonica, and keyboard, and played the guitar, and
drums,and sang all at the same time onstage.There has to be
videos of him on you tube and children,I encourage you to learn
at all times. Oh yeah,there's 30 tracks on this disc. And I'm sort of
angry my favorite song isn't on here, (but at least No More
Hot Dogs is on this) and that's "We Got A Date".
So go and find that song, and tell me what you think.

This one's a doozie,and it's pretty wild! I dig the front cover!
I love the music and great song titles: Switchblade Sam, Hot Lips Baby,
Gone Baby Gone, Let's Paint The Town Red, Darn Dem Bones!
Slippery Sal, So Wild, and Juvenile Delinquent! I'm sure, this is
one of the strongest volumes,with the most fun songs. All tracks
from the original 1950's singles, and most songs clock in at about
2 minutes 10 seconds flat. And nearly all of these volumes have 30
tracks each, and it's worth hearing each and every song.

Ice Cold - Buffalo Bop - Teen Age Machine Age!

Ice Cold is not ice cold-it's red hot baby! I found a lot of tracks
to fall in love with this week; Teen Age Machine Age, Bermuda Shorts,
Gee Whiz!, Miss Secretary, Pajama Party, Walkie Talkie, and yet
another cover of Mule Skinner Blues. Now that should date this
volume to songs about as new as 1960 or so. Because that's when
that terrific hit-out-of-nowhere came out by The Fendermen.
The Fendermen were a pop rockabilly duo in the early 1960s.
Primarily composed of Jim Sundquist (from Kingsford,WI.)
and Phil Humphrey(from Stoughton,near Madison WI.)
The group had one big hit record with Mule Skinner Blues released
in 1960 on the Cuca Records Label out of Sauk City,Wisconsin.
The song was a number #3 on the Billboard Charts,so then came a
slew of covers, trying to exploit the hit...but no one really did it as well
as The Fendermen, man! (The Cramps do the best cover version in
my humble opinion, no one can yodel like Lux)

Tuff-E-Nuff - Buffalo Boppin' - Cool Guitar!

First off,it's nice that people like these compilations. Once you
listen to a couple of these, you can become addicted to them
pretty easily. I did, and with so many volumes,I am also never
bored with the music,ever. The tracks that stand out on this volume
are: Wiggle Walkin' Baby, Crazy,Crazy, My Rock And Roll Daddy,
Cool Guitar, It's Witchcraft, and High Classed Baby!
As always,these come along with artwork, and most of these covers
are from actual pulp fiction styled paperbacks, which are also
highly collectible, for their hand drawn artwork. You can actually
google that, and find a mountain of artwork! Plus they're
kind of funny, in a dated sort of way. Again just to keep you
tuned into these,these tracks are from the original 45's-the singles
plucked right out of the 1950's, and many of them were never
reissued on any other disc.A true time machine find. So Go,Man,Go!

Rockin' Orbit-Buffalo Bop- Gonna Ride The Satelite!

This one has a definite theme to it-all space rockabilly!This one
just might be my favorite, since I love 1950's monster and sci-fi
movies from that era. My favorite movies are Tarantula,
The Creature From The Black Lagoon, and the super early film
The Day The Earth Stood Still. And who wouldn't love these
songs titles: Orbit With Me, The Martian Band, Moon Eyes,
Monkey On The Moon, Planetary Run, Flying Saucer Boogie,
Rocket To The Moon, The Little Space Girl....and how about
this one Zippy Hippy Dippy! They don't even know what
outer space is like, so the songs are pretty funny in many ways.
Wildy entertaining disc! I'm koo koo for this one.
